Avoiding Skidding on the Road

Avoiding Skidding on the Road
By Joseph Devine

Safety is the most important thing to consider when on the road. If you are late to an interview or if you have to make a test on time, you must first concentrate on getting to your destination safely and then once you are there, worry about making it on time.

Most of the time skids are caused by drivers expecting too much out of their vehicle as well as road conditions. A skid is the loss of traction between the tires and the road. Without traction, the vehicle becomes a block of steel that the driver no longer has control over.

Road Conditions

One of the most important things drivers should be aware of is the condition of the road. In icy and rainy weather, the roads become slick and lessen the traction between the tires and the road. Always be aware of harsh weather conditions in order to allow yourself enough time to arrive safely to your destination. If you must face harsh elements, make sure to drive at a pace slower than normal. This will give you more time to stop and steer your vehicle.

Tips to Avoiding Skids

-Understand your vehicle. If your vehicle is large or dense, it may need more time to slow down. Smaller cars may skid further over an area and therefore become more uncontrollable.

-Do not make fast and sharp turns. Remember, a vehicle will continue to go in the direction that it was initially going if it does not have enough time to turn.

-Do not brake suddenly. This causes your wheels to stay fixed and does not allow the brakes time to combat the momentum of the vehicle.

-Do not suddenly accelerate. If a car is rear-wheel drive, the car will likely travel in that direction if the car is suddenly accelerates. If the car is front-wheel drive, then the car will probably head in that direction as well, leaving the back-end swerving.

-Drive slower in harsh weather. If you have not already learned, your vehicle needs ample time to slow itself down, go, stop, and turn in weather that affects the road.

-Stay calm. The calmer you are the slower you will drive and more fluid you will be in your driving.
